Introduction to Fundraising
Fundraising will more than likely be the main source of revenue for your ministry. You'll probably start it out
with your own money, but for the day to day operations and continued charitable support, you'll have to
depend on contributions, donations and your own funding projects.
This is where you get to be VERY creative! There are SO many ways to raise money for your cause, and
as long as you're sincere and believe in your mission, you'll find that there are a lot of generous, concerned
and caring people out there! Fundraising can be a very enjoyable part of your ministry!
Getting Started
How you use and implement the raising of funds will depend on your ministry, your area of charity, and your mission statement.
Here are some general ideas to start your thinking process:
- Individual Solicitation
- Telemarketing
- Direct Mail
- Special Events
- Capital Campaigns
- Corporate Collaboration
- Raffles
- Grants
- Membership (recurring gifts)
(Detailed info. on each of these fundraising ideas is available on the SNPO website.)
These are just a few examples, some of which would not be practical for an on-line ministry, but they're only meant to plant a seed. Again,
you'll need to tailor your fundraising to your individual ministry. You should also try to have someone on your team who does nothing but work
on your fundraising goals and efforts. If you have to pay someone to do it, it's money well spent, but a kind hearted volunteer would be great
too! Just someone who could spend a couple of hours a day or every other day will give you a huge advantage in the area of funding.
Fellowship is a very important item on our checklist. This is something that no ministry can survive without! You must not only surround
yourself with a team who believes in the ministry, but you should also partner with other ministries and companies who have similar visions.
Some may become financial supporters, others may just be "affiliated". Either way, you both win through exposure and mutual support!
There really is "strength in numbers" and "fellowship in faith!"
Grants
One of the areas that we didn't touch on much is Grants. Grants are definitely a realistic avenue to aquire funds. You will need to do some
serious research and paperwork, but it's well worth making part of your financial plan!
You can find out more about grants, fund drives, nonprofit applications and much more when you join the Society for Nonprofit Organizations.
They also have a lot of free information for non-members as well.
